Sørøya: Storsanden & Sandfjellet

Storsanden is a large sand beach on the western side of the island Sørøya. It is a remarkable place to discover and well worth the hike.

From the start in Akkarfjord you follow the main road around the port and small bay in southern direction. After about one and a half kilometre, the road will go straight and lead you westward, all the way to the large sand beach Storsanden.

From there, hikers can continue northwards, past a farmstead and towards a small grove with birch trees. From here it is a short hike northwards towards the top of the sandy hill Sandfjellet, a popular destination for many hikers. This part is only suitable for those on foot. From the sandy hill, you can either return the way you came, or descend the sand hill and continue northwards until you find the main road connecting Akkarfjord with the farmstead Gamvik. Go right at the main road and after about 5 kilometres you will arrive back in Akkarfjord.
